Some artists build their catalog in a straight line. Pedro Habano is not that artist. The Puerto Rican former electronic music producer has spent two years crossing genres — salsa, merengue, bachata, corrido bélico, vallenato — accumulating more than 7 million YouTube plays and an active audience in more than 20 countries. And now, with "Soy Un Borracho," he takes the step nobody predicted: his first full-length album, and he does it in Regional Mexicana and Cumbia Villera.

Ocho canciones originales.

Eight original songs. Six norteñas and rancheras. Two cumbias villeras. A single question the album answers before the first note plays: what happens when a Puerto Rican from Río Grande who grew up producing EDM decides he has something to say to the genre that most honestly and directly puts into words what a man feels when he celebrates, when he loses, and when he decides he won't apologize for either?

("And this time I'll toast the round — waiter, bring me 70 glasses, to toast my ex and one more I left, and so make way for the others.") — Soy Un Borracho

"Soy Un Borracho" is not a song about alcohol. It's a philosophy. The image of the narrator — dancing at the bar, cigar in hand, begging no one — is not that of someone who got lost. It's that of someone who made a decision about how he wants to live. If norteña has a tradition of figures who bend before pain, Pedro Habano arrives with a variation: the one who celebrates instead of lamenting, who toasts his exes precisely because he no longer needs them.

The album opens with that attitude and sustains it over eight tracks that cover a full emotional territory. "Te Acordarás de Mí" complements the spirit of the title track with the confidence of someone who knows time will prove him right. "Tres Copas" navigates the gray zone of friendships that cross lines under the influence of liquor — "De una noche loca no sale na' bueno / mejor como amigos quedemos" ("Nothing good comes from a wild night / better to stay friends") — with the honesty of someone who has walked that road. "Equivocada" is the project's sharpest cut: a ranchera that says exactly what it thinks about certain dynamics disguised as empowerment. And "Te Soñé," the cumbia that closes the cycle, shows that the same narrator who celebrates on track one still carries a real loss.

But if there is one story inside the album that deserves its own headline, it's that of Valentina Velasquez. Pedro Habano Music's Head of Production — announced in that role just months ago — emerges here as a full-fledged artist on three of the project's eight songs. On "Te Estás Enamorando," a pop ranchera built as a dialogue, Valentina and Pedro play two people who made a pact not to get involved and broke it exactly when they should have. On "Al Revés," the two tell from complementary perspectives how a night that "was just for the moment" ended up changing everything. And on "Máscaras," her voice is woven into a ranchera about the betrayal of false friends — not as a guest, but as an organic part of the song's emotional fabric.

— Pedro Habano
"Valentina didn't come to this project because she's part of my team — she came because she's exactly the voice these songs needed." — Pedro Habano

"For me this process has been extremely rewarding — watching something that has become a fundamental pillar of my life take shape little by little," says Valentina. "This step in music, deciding to show myself as an artist and in my craft, is filling me with joy and excitement. Always trying to let art be what guides me along the way." It is the statement of someone who arrived on stage not by accident but by conviction — and "Soy Un Borracho" confirms it.

Behind all eight songs there is a single name in production: David Rivas, known as "Dr. Davinchi," producer, mixer and mastering engineer of the entire album. Pedro Habano describes him as "the brain behind all my hits" — a claim his track record backs up. The result is an album that sounds consistent without sounding uniform: the norteñas have the weight of accordion and certainty of phrasing; the rancheras have the swing of someone who knows the genre without having grown up in it; and the cumbias villeras have that urgent pulse that makes the body not ask for permission.

That accordion weight has a name: Yenifer Quintero — Reyna #EVAFE 2020 and winner of the Premios Núcleo Urbano — is the one who plays the instrument on three of the project's rancheras: "Máscaras," "Equivocada" and "Te Acordarás de Mí." Quintero's accordion doesn't decorate these songs, it anchors them. There is a chemistry between her playing and Pedro Habano's voice that can't be programmed in a session — the kind that simply appears when two artists speak the same language without having rehearsed the accent. On this album, that chemistry appears with a naturalness that turns every accordion entrance into the moment the listener expects without knowing they're waiting for it.
